Albert Heijn, a supermarket brand in the Netherlands, is testing “tap to go” technology at one of its convenience stores to enable customers to pay for items without going through the traditional checkout line, according to a press release.
After registering for the service via an app, customers can select an item, tap an electronic shelf card where the item was located and go. Within 10 minutes, funds will be automatically transferred from their bank account to pay for the goods.
Albert Heijn said technology providers and a bank are behind the test. The chain expects to make it commercially available at its convenience stores in the Netherlands by June 2018.
