MoviePass Changes Ticket Policy

30. April 2018.

After making changes to its Android app and terms of service, MoviePass is adding another modification to its platform: Subscribers can now only watch a particular movie through its movie ticket subscription service one time, Android Central reported.

“We recently updated our Terms of Service to reflect that MoviePass subscribers are only permitted to see a select movie in theaters once with your MoviePass,” the company wrote on its website. “We hope this will encourage you to see new movies and enjoy something different!”

The company’s new and current subscribers will be impacted by the change. Users of the app will now see a “friendly update” about the rule. Once a user watches a movie, that option is grayed out and displays the message, “You’ve already seen this movie.”

The news comes as MoviePass might be permanently removing its monthly $9.95 subscription for one movie ticket per day from its platform. The bundle hasn’t been offered since April 13, when the subscription service decided to change it to just four tickets a month. That offering, which also includes iHeartRadio All Access (normally $9.99 a month), has been considered a “promotion” available for a limited time.

But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe said he doesn’t know if the ticket-a-day product will return at all. Just a few months ago, Lowe said there were no plans to change the service. However, the company said that 88 percent of MoviePass subscribers see fewer than two movies per month, so taking away the option of one ticket per day would only affect 12 percent of its users.

MoviePass lowered its subscription fee from $50 a month to $9.95 in August, which helped its subscription base grow from 20,000 users to more than 2 million. Ted Farnsworth, CEO of parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics, even called it “the fastest-growing company in the history of the internet.”
